SINNERS IN THE HANDS OF AN
ANGRY GOD
BY JONATHAN EDWARDS
Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758) was a famous and
controversial theologian during his lifetime.
Descended from several generations of Puritan
preachers, Edwards showed early brilliance in his
journals. He became a leading figure of the Great
Awakening and tried to drive his congregation back to
strict adherence to Calvinist doctrine with his “fire and
brimstone” preaching. He was eventually forced out
of his own community for his extremist views. He then
worked as a missionary among Native Americans and
as a professor of theology.
