ESPN will “Megacast” its
wild-card game in January and
will have ABC simulcast some
more “Monday Night Foot-
ball” games in December as
Disney further tries to entice
the NFL while it seeks to gain
a Super Bowl in forthcoming
TV deals.
For the wild-card game in
early January, ESPN will have
its lead “MNF” team of Steve
Levy, Louis Riddick and Brian
Griese on its network, as well
as ABC. ESPN2 and FreeForm
will use a different set of com-
mentators for the game, pro-
ducing an alternative format
as the network has done for

college football’s national
championship game. The ex-
act plans are not finalized yet.
ESPN Deportes will have the
Spanish-language broadcast.
For two Monday nights in
December, both involving the
Bills (Dec. 7 vs. San Francisco
and Dec. 28 vs New England),
the games will simulcast on
ABC. ESPN previously simul-
cast the Week 2 Monday
nighter between the Saints
and Raiders.
In other news, the NFL an-
nounced that its Dec. 26 game
between the Cardinals and
49ers will only be seen on Am-
azon Prime Video and Twitch.
Prime Video will make it avail-
able in 240 countries.

Disney and Amazon are
among the companies trying
to close deals with the NFL on
the next TV packages. Disney
is hoping to add a Super Bowl
in the next round of negotia-
tions, with the idea it would be
featured on ABC. However,
there is the possibility it could
be on a number of networks,
as CBS/Viacom will do this
year.
Disney is making a play for
NBC’s “Sunday Night Foot-
ball” package but, if it fails
there, could go just as hard for
another network’s games.
There is a possibility ABC and
ESPN both end up with their
own sets of games.

ESPN boosts NFL postseason

profile in Super Bowl push

By Peter Botte

Bruce Arians’ play-calling and
his working relationship with
Tom Brady have come into
question in recent weeks, but
the Buccaneers’ head coach in-
sists the team’s offense is built
around his star quarterback’s
preferences.
In an off-camera interview
with NFL Network’s Mike Silver,
Arians said Brady is “picking the
plays” during weekly game-
planning, as well as in the hud-
dle and at the line of scrimmage.
“All of the above,” Arians said,
according to Silver, “and it’s
been that way for a while now. ...
We call what he picks. We just
have to get better.”
The Bucs (7-5) have dropped
three of their past four games

entering their bye week, includ-
ing Sunday’s 27-24 loss to Kan-
sas City. Brady has thrown mul-
tiple interceptions in each of the
three losses.
The three-time NFL MVP ab-
ruptly ended his brief postgame
press conference Sunday after
answering a question about Ari-
ans and “running someone
else’s offense.”
“It’s just external noise that,
when you are losing, that’s what
you deal with,” Brady said. “I
love playing with the guys that I
play with, the coaches, the
whole organization has been un-
believable.
“I think I have to go out and
certainly do a better job the last
four weeks of the year. So, I ap-
preciate it. Let’s have a good
week.”

Following the Bucs’ loss the
previous week to the Rams, Ari-
ans had pointed out the 43-year-
old Brady was dealing with a
matter of “continuity” after 20
years with the Patriots.
“We’ve got the guys open.
We’ve just missed ’em,” Arians
said. “I think he’s getting con-
fused a few times with coverage
that might be causing some in-
accurate balls, but I don’t see it
at all in practice. We’re not miss-
ing the deep ball in practice,
that’s for sure, so it’s just a mat-
ter of, on Sundays, hitting ’em.”
In an interview with CBS
ahead of Sunday’s games against
the Chiefs, Arians was asked
about his recent criticism of
Brady’s play and replied, “It’s
not criticism. It’s honesty.”
