Ecosystem Productivity


Of all available sunlight that reaches Earth, less than 3% for land plants and less
than 1% for aquatic plants is used for photosynthesis. This relatively low
efficiency of the conversion of solar energy into energy stored in carbon
compounds sets the overall amount of energy available to heterotrophs at all
other trophic levels.
