Seasons are divided into short, moist, and moderately warm summers and
long, very cold, and dry winters. The length of the growing season in the
southern boreal forests is about 130 days. Soil is thin, nutrient poor, and acidic.
In the boreal forests, the tree canopy permits low light penetration, and, as a
result, the understory is limited. Animals consist of woodpeckers, hawks, moose,
bears, weasels, lynxes, deer, hares, chipmunks, shrews, and bats.
