Forest Management

Forests cover about one-third of all land surface worldwide. Most—80%—of
these forests are closed canopies (tree crowns covering more than 20% of the
ground), and 20% are classified as open canopy (tree crowns covering less than
20% of the ground surface). Most forests (70%) are located in North America,
the Russian Federation, and South America. In the United States, the largest area
of timbering is in the Pacific Northwest, employing 150,000 people and
representing a $7 billion per year industry.
