- (B) The bacteria that normally work to decompose livestock wastes are
anaerobic, operate only in environments with little or no oxygen, and
produce nitrous oxide (N 2 O). Digesters can be constructed to reduce
livestock wastes to methane gas (CH 4 ), which can then be burned as a fuel.
