  1. (D) In  the pre-industrial  stage,  living  conditions  are harsh,  birth   and death

    rates are high, and there is little increase in population size. In the
    transitional stage, living conditions improve, the death rate drops, and birth
    rates remain high. In the industrial stage, growth slows. In the post-
    industrial stage, zero population growth is reached, and the birth rate falls
    below the death rate.
