FREE-RESPONSE ANSWER
10 Total Points Possible
(a) Maximum 2 points total: 1 point for the correct calculation setup and 1 point
for the correct answer.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, in 1967, 62 million acres of
corn were planted. In 2016, that number rose to 93 million acres. What is the
percent increase in planted acreage over this approximately 50-year period
of time?
Responses must include a setup similar to the one below. While units are not
required in the setup, the numbers should be consistent, and they should
recognize the correct mathematical operation (in this case a variant of the
percent change equation) where:
(b) Maximum 2 points total: 1 point for a correct representation of the graph and
1 point for a correct description and connection to Malthus’s thinking.
Thomas Malthus described concerns about the different rates of growth for
the human population and its food production. Use a graph and words to
demonstrate your understanding of the trends he was predicting for both
food availability and the human population.
The two lines may be drawn on a single set of axes or they might be represented
on two separate axes. You should demonstrate Malthus’ prediction that food
availability would grow arithmetically (“linear” or “constant” growth are also
acceptable descriptions) over time and his prediction that the human population
would grow exponentially. “Population Growth” and “Food Production” are the
two quantities that should be used on the y-axes.
