climate change which can reduce and alter
natural habitats, causing a loss of certain
species.
– Pollutants from combustion and manufacturing
can cause habitat destruction and/or species
death.

Abundant use of
fertilizers

– Runoff from agricultural lands creates areas of
higher than normal nitrogen/phosphorus levels
in adjacent water (fresh/salt) which can cause
massive food web changes, species death, or
dead zones.

(d) Maximum 2 points total: 1 point for listing one form of malnutrition and 1
point for its description.
The development of the techniques that you described above is an extension
of the Green Revolution. This effort has helped to provide a more consistent
food source for our growing population. Despite these efforts, food
availability remains an issue for nearly one-third of the world’s population.
Name and describe one specific form of malnutrition.
Answers may vary but each correct answer should LIST the form of
malnutrition AND include a brief description of the causes of that type of
malnutrition.

Examples include:

■ Anemia is a condition that develops when there are insufficient red blood
cells. This can cause fatigue since cells and organs are not receiving
adequate oxygen. Anemia can be caused by an insufficient amount of iron
in the diet. Iron is integral to hemoglobin, the protein that is critical to the
oxygen-carrying capacity in the blood.
■ Scurvy is a condition that results from a lack of vitamin C. Symptoms
include fatigue and sore limbs.
■ Osteoporosis is a disease that results in weak bones or bones at risk from
breakage. Deficiencies in calcium, vitamin D, and vitamin K have been
associated with osteoporosis.
