  1. (B) Ammonia is produced by the breakdown of organic sources of nitrogen
    when organisms die. Nitrification is the process by which this ammonia is
    converted to nitrites (NO 2 – ) by bacteria of the genus Nitrosomonas and then
    to nitrates (NO 3 – ) by bacteria of the genus Nitrobacter.
