- (C) The emissions to the atmosphere from coal-burning power plants
contain 84 of the 187 hazardous air pollutants posing a threat to human
health and the environment. Coal-fired power plants in the United States
account for 40% of all hazardous air pollutant point sources, more than any
other point source category. Coal-burning power plants are the largest point
source category for the release of hydrochloric acid, mercury, and arsenic
and are a major source of several criteria air pollutants such as sulfur
dioxide, oxides of nitrogen, and particulate matter.
