  1. (D) Car A travels 500 miles at 15 miles to the gallon and therefore uses
about 500/15 = 33.3 gallons of gasoline. Car B travels the same 500 miles
    but uses about 500/30 = 16.7 gallons of gasoline. Car A uses 33.3 – 16.7 =
16.6 more gallons of gasoline than car B. If each gallon of gasoline that is
burned contributes 5 pounds of carbon (in the form of CO 2 ) to the
atmosphere, then car A will contribute 5 × 16.6 = 83 more pounds of carbon
    than car B.
