  1. (E) For the poor in developing countries (urban and rural), wood is usually
    the principal source of energy for cooking food and for keeping warm. In
    these countries, an estimated 86% of all the wood consumed annually is
    used as fuel. As populations have grown, this dependence on wood has led
    inexorably to the destruction of the forests. Wood fuels account for two-
    thirds of all energy sources used in Africa and one-third in Asia. This
    compares with the 0.3% of total energy use in developed countries. In
    developing countries, the principal noncommercial fuels other than wood
    are animal dung and crop residues.
