  1. (B) In 1986, a reactor exploded in the town of Chernobyl in Ukraine and
    released 30 to 40 times the radioactivity of the atomic bombs dropped on
    Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians, Russians,
    and Belorussians had to abandon entire cities and settlements within a 20-
    mile zone of extreme contamination. Some 3 million people are still living
    in contaminated areas.
