- (C) Drift netting is a fishing technique in which nets, called drift nets, are
allowed to drift free in a sea or lake. A drift net is a gill net with floats
attached to a rope along the top of the net, and weights attached to another
rope along the foot of the net. With drift gill nets, fish try to swim through
certain-sized mesh openings but are unable to squeeze through swimming
forward. Once in this position, they are prevented from backing out due to
the tendency of their gills becoming entangled in the net. Nets of up to 30
miles (50 km) have been set in recent times.
