  1. (C) Drift netting is a fishing technique in which nets, called drift nets, are
    allowed to drift free in a sea or lake. A drift net is a gill net with floats
    attached to a rope along the top of the net, and weights attached to another
    rope along the foot of the net. With drift gill nets, fish try to swim through
    certain-sized mesh openings but are unable to squeeze through swimming
    forward. Once in this position, they are prevented from backing out due to
    the tendency of their gills becoming entangled in the net. Nets of up to 30
    miles (50 km) have been set in recent times.
