Addition and Subtraction Concepts 101
Drop It
A game designed to build the
concept of near tens
Materials:
Q^ Die (labeled 18, 28, 39, 49, 40, 50)
Q^ Plus/Minus Spinner, paper clip and pencil
Q^ Drop It Hundred Chart
Q^ Chip or counter
Directions:
- The fi rst player spins the spinner to fi nd out if he will add or
subtract. - The fi rst player drops the chip/counter on the hundred chart
to fi nd one of the numbers in his equation and rolls the die to
fi nd the other number in the equation. Note: The chip/counter is
dropped on the 1–50 section (shaded) for addition and the 51–100 sec-
tion (not shaded) for subtraction. This number serves as the fi rst addend
or the minuend. The number on the die serves as the second addend or
the subtrahend. For example, 74 – 39 =? The player touches 74 on
the hundred chart, moves his fi nger up four rows of ten (– 40)
and forward one space to the right (+ 1). The player describes
the near tens situation, for example, 74 – 39 = 74 – 40 + 1. - The sum/difference is the player’s positive score for the round.
- The next player spins the spinner, drops the chip/counter, rolls
the die, models, and describes the near tens equation. - Players add their scores from each round. The winning player
is the player with the highest score after 10 rounds.
