118 Multiplication and Division Concepts
Cakes and Candles
A game designed to build the concept
of repeated addition multiplication
Materials:
Q (^) One white die (labeled 1–6 with numerals)
Q^ One red die (labeled 1–6 with numerals)
Q^ Paper and pencil (or dry erase board and
marker) for each player
Directions:
- The fi rst player rolls the dice. The white die represents the cakes.
The red die represents the candles on each cake. - Players race to draw the number of cakes and the number of
candles on each cake. For example, if the number on the white die
is 3 and the number on the red die is 2, the illustration may look
like this... - The fi rst player to complete the picture and call out the total
number of candles (product) scores two points. - If the player who rolled the dice can state the “groups of”
equation, she earns one point. For example, “3 groups of
2 equal 6.” - Players continue taking turns rolling, illustrating, calling out the
product, and giving equations. - The winner is the fi rst player to score 20 or greater.
Content Differentiation:
Moving Back: Use dice labeled 1, 1, 2, 2, 3, 3 with numerals.
Moving Ahead: Use decahedron dice (labeled 0–9) or 0–9 spinner
(see page 142).
