Cookies for My Friends
A game designed to build the concept
of repeated subtraction division

Materials:

Q^ 10 paper plates
Q^ 100 counting chips
Q^ Cookie Cards cut apart and placed in a cup
Q^ Paper and pencil (or dry erase board and
marker) for each player

Directions:

  1. The fi rst player chooses a random cookie card from the cup.
The player gathers this many counting chips to represent
    cookies.

  2. The player reads how many cookies each friend gets and
begins subtracting out sets of cookies represented by chips.
The player places sets of cookies on plates. Other players
consider how many friends will share the cookies/how many
plates will be used/how many times the divisor can be
subtracted. The other players race to draw a picture of what
the model will look like when complete.

  3. The fi rst person who completes an accurate illustration scores
one point. Note: The player modeling the repeated subtraction with
chips and plates does not try to score.

  4. Players take turns choosing cookie cards, modeling different
repeated subtraction scenarios, and illustrating the models.

  5. The winner is the fi rst player to earn ten points.
