Piggy Banks
A game designed to build the concept
of fair shares division
Materials:
Q^ 100 pennies
Q^ Hundred chart
Q^ Scissors
Q^ Cup
Q^ 12 Piggy Banks
Directions:
- Cut apart the numbers in the hundred chart. Place the numbers
1–100 in a cup. - The fi rst player chooses one random number from the cup. This
number is used as the dividend. The player gathers pennies to
represent the dividend. The player then decides how many
piggy banks to use to try to have fair shares. The player lays
out the piggy banks. - The player then distributes the pennies in equal amounts, one at
a time to each bank. - If the player distributes fair shares, meaning there are no left over
pennies, the player earns 1 point for each piggy bank used. If
there is a remainder, no points are earned and players decide if a
different amount of piggy banks could have been used. - Players take turns choosing dividends, deciding how many piggy
banks, and distributing pennies. - The winner is the fi rst player to score 50 points or greater.
Content Differentiation:
Moving Back: Use only the numbers that are multiples of 2, 5, or 10.
