Successful Strategies
Teaching students to identify perfect squares and near
squares is the fi rst step in ownership of these facts. Ask
students to explain which two squares “sandwich” the near
square. Use manipulatives and graph paper arrays to model
one more group and one less group. Write the facts in order
so students can see the patterns. As students gain ownership
of perfect squares and near squares, we need to encourage
them to use this knowledge with related division facts.
