152 Multiplication and Division Concepts

Near Tens for Multiplication......................................................................

CONCEPT:

What is the Near Tens for Multiplication Concept?
The near tens concept involves adjusting multiplication facts
based on their proximity to tens facts. The near tens concept
can be used with the nines facts, for example, 9 x 7 = (10 x 7)

  • (1 x 7). If can also be used with eights facts, for example, 8 x 7 =
    (10 x 7) – (2 x 7). Additionally, the near tens concept can be used
    with the elevens facts, for example, 11 x 7 = (10 x 7) + (1 x 7)
    and the twelves facts, for example, 12 x 7 = (10 x 7) + (2 x 7).
While the same type of adjustments can be applied to any facts,
the near tens concept is most applicable to the 9s, 8s, 11s, and
12s multiplication facts. When students use the near tens concept,
they apply the kind of fl exibility with numbers which is
needed for mental math and deep conceptual understanding.

Formative Assessment
To fi nd out if a student understands the near tens for
multiplication concept, ask the student to solve the following
equations:
6 x 10 = 10 x 8 = 11 x 7 = 9 x 11 =
7 x 9 = 9 x 5 = 5 x 12 = 8 x 12 =
4 x 8 = 8 x 6 =
Have the student explain how he solves each problem. If the
student uses the traditional algorithm (successfully or not
successfully), ask the student if he knows another way to
solve the equations. Invite the student to try the problems
using what they know about multiplying tens.
