156 Multiplication and Division Concepts

Roll and Flip
A game designed to build the concept of near tens
for multiplication and division

Materials:

Q (^) Die with six sides labeled 10 x, 10 x, 9 x,
9 x, 8 x, 8 x
Q^ 0–9 Number Cards (see page 72)
Directions:

  1. Players shuffl e and distribute cards face down.

  2. The fi rst player rolls the die and fl ips one of her cards. If the
player rolls 10 x, she multiplies ten times the number on the card.
If the player rolls 9 x or 8 x, she uses the 10 times multiplication
    fact to mentally solve it. For example, 4 x 9 = (4 x 10) – (4 x 1).

  3. The player must describe how she uses the near tens concept. The
product is the player’s score for that round.

  4. Players take turns rolling the die, fl ipping cards, and using near
    tens to solve the problems.

  5. Play continues for ten rounds. Players add their scores from each
round. The winner is the player with the highest score.

Content Differentiation:
Moving Back: Use a die with only 10 x and 9 x.
Moving Ahead: Include the related division equations for each
round. Change the die to include 11 x and 12 x.
