Fact Families—Multiplication and Division

CONCEPT:

What are Fact Families for Multiplication
and Division?
Fact families for multiplication and division are facts
that are directly related. In the fact family, there are two
multiplication problems and two division problems. The
multiplication facts are manifestations of the commutative
property because changing the order does not change
the result of the operation. The division facts are inverse
operations of the multiplication facts.

Formative Assessment
To fi nd out if a student understands multiplication and
division fact families, provide the following incomplete fact
family and ask the student which fact is missing from the
family:
7 x 5 = 35
35 ÷ 7 = 5
35 ÷ 5 = 7
If the student is not successful, try fact families with smaller
numbers. If the student is successful, ask him to generate all
of the facts in the 6, 9, 54 fact family.
