Products in Parts
A game designed to build the concept of partial products

Materials:
Q^ Several sheets of centimeter graph paper
Q^ Highlighter for each player
Q^ Base ten blocks
Q^ Two red dice (labeled 1–6 with numerals)
Q^ Two white dice (labeled 1–6 with numerals)
Q^ Dry erase boards and markers (or paper and pencils)

Directions:

  1. The fi rst player rolls all four dice to generate a 2-digit times
2-digit multiplication equation. The red dice represent the
tens and the white dice represent the ones.

  2. The player shows the equation with lines and
dots using the highlighter on graph paper. For
example, 12 x 21 includes one line of ten and
two dots of one times two lines of ten and one
    dot of one.

  3. The player shows a model of the partial
products by placing base ten blocks to show
    the array.

  4. Other players race to record the partial products (10 x 20) +
    (10 x 1) + (2 x 20) + (2 x 1) = 200 + 10 + 40 + 2. The fi rst player
with the correct partial products scores 1,000 points.

  5. Players take turns rolling, modeling and recording partial
products. The winner is the fi rst player to score 10,000.
