170 Multiplication and Division Concepts

Successful Strategies
Encourage students to come up with ways to record the
partial quotients. Students may decide to record the partial
quotients with a different color marker, on a separate sheet
of paper, or on sticky notes. If students fi gure out what
works best for them, they are more likely to know what to
do because they understand why it works. As with partial
products, even if students successfully use the traditional
algorithm, learning the partial quotients concept strengthens
conceptual understanding, increases mental math capacity,
and improves fl exibility and fl uency.
