Expanded Form

CONCEPT:

What is the Expanded Form Concept?
Expanded form involves expressing a number as a sum of the
products of each digit. The expanded form concept is deeply
rooted in place value. Expressing the value of any number by
highlighting the parts of that number helps students build
fl uency with numbers. Working with expanded form also
helps students understand how numbers are composed and
decomposed.

Formative Assessment
To fi nd out if a student understands expanded form, ask the
student to name the values for the following expanded form
expressions:

(4 x 10) + (8 x 1) (3 x 100) + (5 x 10) + (3 x 1)
(7 x 100) + (6 x 1) (2 x 1,000) + (3 x 100) + (9 x 10) + (1 x 1)
(7 x 1,000) + (8 x 100) + (3 x 1) (4 x 10,000) + (6 x 100) + (5 x 10)

Ask the student to give the expanded form of the following
numbers:

63 425
907 4,820
6,039 24,309

Find out the range of the student’s knowledge of the
expanded form concept by identifying to which place value
the student is successful.
