P rime Time
A game designed to build the concepts
of prime and composite numbers
Materials:
Q Dry erase board and marker for each player
Q 0–9 Number Cards copied on yellow paper
(see page 72)
Q 0–9 Number Cards copied on green paper
(see page 72)
Directions:
- Players shuffl e each set of number cards and place them face
down in two piles. - To begin the fi rst round, a player chooses one yellow number
card and one green number card to make a 2-digit number. The
yellow card serves as the tens digit and the green card serves as
the ones digit. Note: If a yellow zero is drawn, the number will be a
single digit number. - If the number formed with the cards is a prime number, the
player earns fi ve points and the turn is complete. If the number
formed is a composite number, the players race to draw factor
trees for the number on dry erase boards. The fi rst player to
complete the factor tree calls out “Prime Factorization Com-
plete!” If her factor tree is accurate, she earns ten points. If the
factor tree is not accurate, she earns zero points. - Players continue taking turns choosing cards, identifying prime
numbers, drawing factor trees, and keeping a running total. - The fi rst player to reach a score of 50 calls out “Prime Time” and
is the winner. Note: Number cards can be shuffl ed and reused.
