What is the Take Away Subtraction Concept?
Take away subtraction is one of three types of subtraction.
Take away subtraction involves set removal. In number
stories, a certain amount is removed, eaten, given, lost,
hidden, or otherwise taken away. In a subtraction equation,
the subtrahend is being subtracted from the minuend to fi nd
the difference. In the example 7 – 2 = 5, 7 is the minuend,
2 is the subtrahend, and 5 is the difference. Students
need many meaningful experiences to build conceptual
understanding of take away subtraction.

Formative Assessment
To fi nd out if a student understands take away subtraction,
ask the student to tell a story that matches the following
equation: 10 – 4 = 6. Notice if the student uses words
that represent take away subtraction. If the student is not
successful, try a smaller equation such as 4 – 1 = 3 and invite
the student to use manipulatives to demonstrate as he tells
the number story. If the student is successful with 10 – 4 = 6,
give a larger equation such as 25 – 6 = 19 and invite the
student to write the equation and tell a related number story.
