Hungry Frog
A game designed to build the concept
of take away subtraction

Materials :

Q (^) Hungry Frog Game Board
Q (^) 40 small counters
Q^ Dice (two six-sided cubes
labeled 1–6 with numerals)
Directions:

  1. Players place one counter on each fl y on the game board.

  2. The fi rst player rolls both dice and decides which number
she wants to use to represent how many fl ies Hungry Frog
will eat. The player tells a number story about Hungry
Frog eating fl ies, models the take away subtraction by
taking away counters, and states the subtraction equation.
For example, there are 40 fl ies. Hungry Frog eats three.
    Now there are 37 fl ies left, 40 – 3 = 37.

  3. The next player rolls the dice and chooses one of the numbers
to be the subtrahend. The player tells the new subtraction
    story and states the equation. For example, 37 – 5 = 32.

  4. Players take turns rolling the dice, choosing a subtrahend,
telling and modeling the associated number story, and
    stating the equation.

  5. The winner is the player who has Hungry Frog eat the last
fl y. An exact number must be rolled to win.
