Compare Bear
A game designed to build the concept
of comparison subtraction
Materials:
Q^ Number Mat for each player
Q Two different colored bear counters
for each player
Directions :
- The fi rst player drops the two bears onto the Number
Mat. The player announces the two numbers that the
bears land on (or are closest to) and states the difference.
For example, if the bears land on 14 and 8, the player
says, “The difference between 14 and 8 is 6.” - The player also tells a comparison subtraction story.
For example, “Blue Bear has 14 cookies. Red Bear has 8
cookies. Blue Bear has 6 more cookies than Red Bear.” - The next player drops two bears on his number mat.
The player announces the two numbers, states the
difference, and tells a comparison subtraction story. - The player with the greater difference scores one point.
- Players take turns dropping bears on their number
mats, stating the difference, and telling the associated
number stories. - The winner is the fi rst player to score ten points.
Content Differentiation :
Moving Back: Use connecting cubes to show the numbers
to help students see the differences.
Moving Ahead: Try the same game using a hundred chart
as the number mat.
