Addition and Subtraction Concepts 71
X Marks the Spot
A game designed to build the concept
of adding doubles and near doubles
Materials:
Q^ 0–9 Number Cards or 0–9 Number Tiles
in a paper cup
Q X Marks the Spot Game Boards
Q^ Two highlighters or light markers (different colors)
Directions :
- Players decide which color highlighter each person will use.
- Without looking into the cup, the fi rst player chooses a number.
The player doubles the number and looks for the sum on the
game board. - The player marks the sum with a dot using the highlighter to
“hold” the spot and places the number back into the cup. - The next player chooses a number, doubles the number and
looks for the sum on the game board. The player can mark the
sum with a dot to hold it OR the player can “claim” any sum
that is currently being held with a dot. - If the player claims a held sum, the highlighter is used to draw
X on the sum. - Players take turns choosing numbers, doubling, and holding or
claiming sums. Note: All sums must be held before they are claimed.
Held sums can be claimed by any player. - The winner is the fi rst player to have four claimed sums (Xs) in
a row (horizontal, vertical, or diagonal).
Content Differentiation :
Moving Back: Play the game without holding sums prior to
claiming sums.
Moving Ahead: Play the same game using Near Doubles. The near
double is one more or one less than the closest double.
