In Chapter 4 you experienced what it would have been like many, many years ago
to read a sentence without any spacing or punctuation, and with capitals or lower-
case letters used at will. The Romans might also have written it in the following
way, using capitals as the fi rst letter of every word. Neither way makes the meaning
of the sentence accessible to the reader.
