Problems


The strategy that is used to solve word problems in algebra is as follows:

l. Represent an unknown by usingx.


  1. If necessary, represent the other unknowns by using algebraic
    expressions in terms ofx.

  2. From the conditions of the problem, write an equation using the
    algebraic representation of the unknown(s).
    EXAMPLE:One number is 8 more than another number and the sum of the
    two numbers is 26. Find the numbers.


SOLUTION:

GOAL: You are being asked to find two numbers.
