Problems
The strategy that is used to solve word problems in algebra is as follows:
l. Represent an unknown by usingx.
- If necessary, represent the other unknowns by using algebraic
expressions in terms ofx. - From the conditions of the problem, write an equation using the
algebraic representation of the unknown(s).
EXAMPLE:One number is 8 more than another number and the sum of the
two numbers is 26. Find the numbers.
SOLUTION:
GOAL: You are being asked to find two numbers.
