In order to solve word problems involving fractions, use the same strategies
that you used in Lesson 2.


EXAMPLE:Find the total thickness of three pieces of wood that are nailed
together, if one is 1^14 in. thick, one is^78 in. thick, and one is 2 163 in. thick.


SOLUTION:


GOAL: You are being asked to find the total thickness of three pieces of
wood.
