If Manchester City go on to win the

Champions League this season this

match will not feature prominently in

their highlights reel, but the goalless

draw against Porto meant that they

qualified as winners of group C with

one game to spare.

Pep Guardiola’s team huffed and

puffed but no matter how hard they

tried they could not find a way past the

excellent Porto goalkeeper Agustín

Marchesín, who kept City at bay to send

his team through to the last 16 as

runners-up.

Only Rúben Dias knows how the

match ended scoreless. City’s record

signing had subdued Moussa Marega,

the dangerous Porto forward, all even-

ing, but it is safe to say that his finishing

is not quite on a par with that of his

team-mates. With Porto creaking

under relentless pressure from City’s

much-changed team, Dias slid in at the

back post, completely unmarked, but

somehow managed to hook Fernandi-

nho’s deflected cross away from an

open goal from less than one yard away.

Dias’s accidental clearance flew

straight to Ferran Torres, who

attempted an overhead kick, but Mar-

chesín was there to stop the Spaniard.

Some of the seven players brought

into the team, such as Phil Foden and

Fernandinho, acquitted themselves

well, but others, like Eric García,

showed signs of rustiness. That mat-

tered little to Guardiola, who would

have won the game had Gabriel Jesus’s

late strike not been overturned by VAR.

As far as Guardiola was concerned it

was mission accomplished, as he can

now rest key players such as Kevin De

Bruyne and Raheem Sterling in next

week’s dead rubber against Marseilles,

three days before the Manchester

derby at Old Trafford. “We played

exceptionally well,” the City manager

said. “Unfortunately we could not score
but we came here to finish first and we
did. Incredible congratulations to the
team for all the group stage performan-
ces, especially the away games. We
played with huge personality.”
Guardiola screamed at his players
from the touchline from minute one.
He wanted to see the likes of Foden,
García, Fernandinho, João Cancelo
and Bernardo Silva take their chance to
impress him while the likes of De
Bruyne and Kyle Walker rested.
City could have had an early penalty
when Malang Sarr cleared Sterling out
but VAR decided the defender had not
committed a foul.
García was wasteful, losing posses-
sion twice in as many minutes. Jesús
Corona raced forward on the counter
after García’s second error, but City got
back in time.
Ederson banged into Otávio in the
City box. The latter fell to the turf, but
neither the referee nor the video assist-

ant deemed it to be a penalty despite the
protests of the men in blue and white.
When City had the ball, Porto quick-
ly formed two defensive lines, one con-
taining five players, the other four. City
could not pick their way through, ex-
cept during the odd counter. In one
such instance, Foden curled a pass to
Torres but Marchesín saved the shot.
Had Torres found the net, the goal
would have been ruled out for offside.
Sterling burst into life again before
half-time. The forward crept in behind
the Porto defence to meet Fernandi-
nho’s pass, but just as he was about to
shoot Sarr made a crucial intervention.
The game started to get scrappy, but
Foden shone. His curved pass left Ster-
ling bearing down on goal. Marchesín
repelled his shot. The rebound fell to
Torres, but he dallied too long.
City kept plodding on and they
should have taken the lead midway
through the second half. Sterling
nudged Fernandinho’s cross to the back

Rooney calls

for clarity on

manager role

Wayne Rooney says a decision needs to
be made as soon as possible over a
permanent appointment to the Derby
County manager’s job amid
speculation that his former England
team-mate John Terry is being lined up
for the role.
Rooney watched Derby concede a
late equaliser for the second game
running with him in sole caretaker
charge as his side drew 1-1 at home to
Coventry City to stay bottom of the Sky
Bet Championship.
The 35-year-old, who did not play
last night at Pride Park, is keen on the
full-time job but said he did not know if
he would still be in charge for
Saturday’s trip to Millwall. A takeover
of Derby by Derventio Holdings,
controlled by Sheikh Khaled Bin Zayed
Al Nahyan — a cousin of the Manches-
ter City owner Sheikh Mansour — is
nearing completion.
“The quicker the new ownership is
done the better, because a decision
needs to be made,” Rooney said.
“For everyone at the club, the fans, all
the staff at the club, so that we can have
more stability and put more plans in
place. I’m hoping it’s really close. I will
take the team until then.”
When the name of Terry, who is on
the coaching staff at Aston Villa, was
put to Rooney, he said: “I’m sure the
owners will be doing their own research
and speaking to people, but that’s down
to them. Whatever decision is made, I’ll
respect it.
“Once it happens, there’ll be a press
release from the club. Then I can
answer your questions better.”
Colin Kazim-Richards looked to
have given Derby their first home win
since June with his 83rd-minute
headed goal from Nathan Byrne’s cross.
But in added time Gustavo Hamer
equalised for Coventry to leave the
home side without a win in 11 games.

post where Dias should have tapped
in from close range but he fluffed his
shot and Marchesín palmed away
Torres’s follow-up. The defender
looked embarrassed.
It felt like nothing would get past
Marchesín. The Argentinian kept Silva
out at his near post and then denied
García. He tipped Jesus’s header on to
the bar and the Brazil striker tapped in
the rebound, but as City began to
celebrate the VAR spotted that Rodri
was offside in the build-up and the goal
was ruled out.
