DARWIN

One of the largest states in the world, with an area ofmore than 1,000,000 sq miles (2.6 million sq km), WesternAustralia covers a third of the Australian continent.

On Christmas Day, 1974, Cyclone Tracy devastated Darwin withwinds of up to 175 mph (280km/h), resulting in 71 deaths,thousands of injuries, and 95 percent of the city destroyed.
