New Zealand has always been a leaderin progressive social legislation. In1893, it was the first country to grantwomen the right to vote.

The Kakapo is a nocturnal flightless parrot that lives in burrows. When in danger, its main form of defense is to remain perfectlystill, which made it an easy target for predators such as thedogs, cats, rats, and ferrets that were introduced in the 19thcentury. Consequently, it is in danger of extinction; in 2009there were only 125 birds left in the wild.

The royal albatross colony on Otago Peninsula is theonly mainland nesting site for these birds in the world.Soaring on wings up to 9’6’’ (3 m) across, breedingpairs mate for life and have been known to livefor over 60 years.

Though still the highest peak inNew Zealand, at 12,316 ft(3754 m), a massive rockfall in 1991 reduced theheight of Aoraki (MountCook) by 33 ft (10 m).
