The largest iceberg of recent times
broke off from the Ross Ice Shelf
in the spring of 2000. It was about
186 miles (300 km) from end to
end and 25 miles (40 km) wide.
Ground visibility in the
Antarctic during the summer
months can be as much
as 150 miles (250 km).
The world's windiest place is reputed
to be Commonwealth Bay, George V
Land, where wind speeds of 200 mph
(320 km/h) have been recorded.
