In 1867 William Henry Seward negotiated
the purchase of Alaska from Russia for
the price of $7,200,000, which amounted
to around two cents per acre (0.4 hectares).

The Aleutian Islands span some 1200 miles
(1800 km) and by crossing the 180º line of
longitude, form both the most easterly
and westerly extents of the United States.

On July 9, 1958, a massive landslide
dropped 40 million cubic yards
(30.6 million cu m) of rock into Lituya Bay,
creating a wave 1720 ft (524 m) high.
