A group of 150 Welsh settlers arrivedin Patagonia on July 28, 1865, seekinga new life away from cultural andreligious oppression in the UK.Today the area has one of the largestWelsh populations outside of Wales.

The Strait of Magellan was named afterFerdinand Magellan, who passed throughthe straits during the first circumnavigationof the globe in 1520. Of the five vessels and237 men that set out, only one ship and 18survivors returned to Spain after the three-yearvoyage. Magellan himself was killedin the Philippines.
