On August 23, 1914, three weeksafter Britain entered World War I, the70,000 strong British ExpeditionaryForce encountered the advancingGerman army for the first time atthe battle of Mons.

Echternach is the home of the only religious dancingprocession remaining in the Western world. Every yearsince the 15th century, thousands of pilgrims have marcheddown the streets of the town performing a ritual danceinvolving specific movements, music, and prayers.

Belgium and theNetherlands have anunderground boundarythat differs from thesurface boundary shown on maps. In 1950, the two countries agreed to move the underground boundary so as not to divide coal mines between the two countries.
