The Kiel Canal is 61 miles (98 km) long andone of the busiest canals in the world, with around45,000 ships a year passing between theBaltic and the North Sea.

During what became knownas “The Berlin Airlift” a total of 2,326,406 tons (tonnes)of supplies were flown intoBerlin over an 18-monthperiod to break a Sovietblockade of the city.

Early in the morning ofSunday, August 13, 1961,work began on the BerlinWall, which would eventuallyrun for 66 miles (107 km)between east and west Berlin,cutting through 192 streets.
