Sofia's skyline is dominated by thegold domes of the Alexander NevskiMemorial Church, which took craftsmenand artists some thirty years to buildbetween 1882 and 1912.

Built between 447 and 438 BCE, the Parthenon survived almost unscathed for over 2000 years until, in 1687, a gunpowder magazine beneaththe building exploded, causing considerable damage.
