Covering an area of approximately34,000 sq miles (88,000 sq km),Pripet Marshes are the largest areaof marshland in Europe.

Formed in 1945 from the northern half ofGerman East Prussia, and ceded to Russiaunder the Potsdam agreement, Kaliningradoblast became a true enclave, completelyseparated from the rest of Russia, whenLithuania and Belarus achieved theirindependence in 1991.

Following the breakup of the Soviet Union,the Commonwealth of Independent Stateswas established on December 8, 1991,by a treaty signed at Minsk, with the intentof coordinating the foreign policies of thenewly independent former Soviet republics.
