AFishand Wildlife Service(FWS)
proposaltobepublished Wednesday
wouldprotectthewhitebarkpinetree
asathreatenedspeciesundertheEn-
dangered Species Act, according to
documentspostedbytheOfficeofthe
FederalRegister.
But the agencysaid it doesn’tplan
todesignatewhichareasarecriticalto
the tree’ssurvival, guidancesome en-
vironmentalistssayisneeded.
Thetrees have beennearly wiped
outinsomeareas,includingtheeast-
ernedgeofYellowstoneNationalPark,
wheretheirconesareasourceoffood
forthreatenedgrizzlybears.
Afungushasbeenkillingwhitebark
pinesforacentury. Morerecently,the
trees have proved vulnerable to bark
beetles thathavekilled millions of
acresofforestandtoclimatechange.
FWS’sproposalsaidwhitebark is
one of manyplantsexpected to be
impacted as climatechange moves
fasterthantheyareabletoadapt.
