his section discusses specific types of writing arranged alphabetically for quick
reference, and appropriate cross-references offer additional help.
The discussion for each type of writing follows a similar format:
• An Overview defines and explains the general purpose of the designated kind of
writing.
• The list of Characteristics names the typical features found in the specific kind
of writing.
• The Process section takes you step-by-step through the method of preparing the
particular kind of paper and includes:
- Prewriting steps, which help you find ideas, select good details, and organize
your thoughts, - Writing steps, which direct your thinking toward the development of a good
paper, - Revising steps, which show you how to check content and structure,
- Proofreading steps, which focus on mechanics, grammar, usage, and spelling.
• Sample Papers illustrate two kinds of features: - the typical features of the individual kind of paper, and
- the appropriate emphasis for papers of this kind when developed for
different curricular purposes.
