No matter the topic or your approach to it, keep in mind that the purpose of any

    ability

PRoCESS

No matter which kind of essay you write, you should follow the same general process
of prewriting, writing, revising, and proofreading. The following guidelines should
be helpful.

STEP 1: Prewriting—Thinking About the Topic

As you narrow your focus, make lists and ask yourself questions. The following ques-
tions help you think of suitable topics and suggest other appropriate questions:

  • What activities have I participated in during the last four years? Which activities
have brought me the greatest satisfaction? Why? Have I grown as a result of
    those activities? How?

  • In what community projects have I participated? How have they affected me
or my interest in civic pride and responsibility? Did I learn to understand or
appreciate government or social conditions? Did I have my eyes opened to
some alarming or exciting facility or situation?

  • Which academic classes maintained my interest? Why? How has that affected
my aspirations? What additional research have I done beyond the confines of the
classroom to further my interest or explore the possibilities of the class subject?

  • What goal was the most difficult for me to attain? How did I overcome that
difficulty? Did I gain some insight about myself or my surroundings as a result?

  • Who has most influenced my life? A real person or a fictional one? How has he
or she influenced me and how have I changed as a result? Is the change good?

  • Where have I traveled? What did I see or do there that most impressed me?
Why was I impressed? Did the experience affect my attitude toward someone
    or something?

  • What happens at home that most affects me? How? Does that help me grow,
    help me become more self-disciplined?

  • What have I read that has affected the way I think or what I do? What effect
has it had? What part of the reading caused me to react as I did?
