ANALYSIS of THE SAMPLE

The preceding essay response meets the goals set out in the process analysis in this
section. Note these specifics:

  • The student’s essay sets him apart from other applicants and lets the reader
    “know” him.

  • Details and examples let readers understand the applicant’s family situation,
the hardships the family and applicant face, and the applicant’s personal
    responsibilities.

  • Details also supply a clear picture of the applicant’s academic experience and
    successes.

  • While the essay details how the applicant succeeded in achieving a 3.8 grade
point average, there is no sense of boasting.

  • The language is formal but not stilted, explanations straightforward and clear.

  • Sentence and paragraph structure are accurate and varied, illustrating a good
    command of language.

  • Because of excellent sentence variety, no sentence begins with “I,” and the
    pronoun is not overused.

  • The applicant uses a highly personal voice.

Although your scholarship application may include a specific question that directs
you to write an essay quite different in content from the sample above, using the
same principles as outlined here will give you an advantage over other applicants.

Job aPPlications

PURPoSE

A job application for a part-time job at a fast-food restaurant or similar employ-
ment is unlikely to require any type of written essay, but good sentence structure and
accurate spelling reflect more about your educational background than most people
imagine. On the other hand, professional positions and advancements up the profes-
sional career ladder typically ask for a resume with an accompanying introductory
business letter. [For help with both, see Chapter 35, Resume, as well as Business Let-
ters to Accompany a Resume in Chapter 26, Letters.]

PRoCESS

help you prepare a job-winning application.
