In order to distinguish your product or position from others similar to it, you need
something referred to as sales features. In the example in Step 1, the sales features
include the blueprint, the step-by-step instructions, the diagrams, and the list of
materials, tools, and equipment. These are the specific items that will help sell your
product or position.

STEP 3: Prewriting—Adding Other Details
Make a separate list of the additional necessary details. These include a phone num-
ber, address, or perhaps e-mail. You may choose to include a price. You may include
other specifics such as, but not limited to, the following:
- time of day phone number is in service (Example: between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.)
- response time needed (Example: allow three weeks for delivery)
- method of selection (Example: applications accepted)
STEP 4: Prewriting—Considering the Reader
Most people read classified ads quickly, noting only the first few words. Thus, the
words for the entire ad must be arranged in order of importance. Use this general
method:
- First, give the product or position name.
- Next, give descriptive sales features.
- Finally, add details.
STEP 5: Writing—Including the Essentials
When you write the classified ad following the preceding steps, omit any words not
absolutely necessary. The ad need not include complete sentences: phrases, even sin-
gle words, are acceptable in lieu of sentences in a classified ad. Abbreviations are
appropriate.
