Technical Report / 401

ANALYSIS of THE SAMPLE TECHNICAL REPoRT

The preceding sample follows the process outlined in the explanation for developing
a technical report. You will note certain specifics that will further help you develop
your own:

  • The format, with sections clearly labeled, allows a reader to move quickly
    through sections of little interest.

  • The Table of Contents and the List of Tables and Figures clarify the
organization and permit the reader to find specific sections or graphics quickly.

  • While technical terminology is kept to a minimum, appropriate vocabulary
appears throughout. Some reports may require a higher frequency of technical
    vocabulary.

  • All measurements are given in the metric system.

  • All data reported appear in logical order, both on the graphs and in the
appendixes. For instance, Figures 1–5 report statistics in centimeters. The
reader can move logically from the bottom of the chart to top to see increased
growth. Likewise, the reader can move logically from left to right to follow
    the time span.

  • The parenthetical documentation included within the text provides adequate
but simple citation of reference materials. [Compare this format with that of the
samples for Research Paper in Chapter 34.]

  • The graphics, especially in the section titled Data Analysis, enhance or
even replace text. Effective visual aids can provide significant support to all
    technical reports.

  • The bibliography includes works consulted as well as works cited.

By using the steps outlined in this section, you should be able to prepare a technical
report to meet the needs of virtually any situation.
